When she first reached out about doing her first boudoir session, she wasn't coming in overflowing with confidence.

Actually, it was pretty much the opposite.

She told us she wanted to do this because people in her life kept telling her boudoir could be a confidence boost—and she was struggling with really low self-esteem.

Then I asked her the question I ask when we're starting to figure out what someone's session should actually feel like:

What kind of vibe are you drawn to?

Her answer?

“A mix of a few of those honestly I really like soft romantic and spicy and dark and moody I think.”

And I LOVED that answer.

Because she didn't have to pick just one.

During her boudoir session here in Jacksonville, we were able to take her from soft natural light and green lace, into a dark and dramatic library, and finally into colorful neon lighting and the pole.

Same woman.

Same session.

Three completely different sides of her.

And that's what I really want women to see when they look through these photographs.

You don't have to figure out which version of yourself you're “supposed” to be before you walk through my door.

Starting Soft and Romantic

She told me she loved soft and romantic, so that's where we started.

The white bedroom, natural window light, and green lace gave us that softer look she had pictured when we first talked about her session.

And there's something I really love about starting here, especially with someone doing boudoir for the first time.

You don't need to walk through the door suddenly knowing how to pose because you've booked a photoshoot.

You don't need to know what to do with your face.

You definitely don't need to know what to do with your hands.

I guide all of that.

I've photographed enough women who were convinced they were going to be the one person I couldn't pose to know how common that fear is.

You aren't expected to arrive at my Jacksonville boudoir studio already knowing how to be “good at” boudoir.

That's my job.

Your job is to show up.

This is also why I don't think you need to wait until you're more confident to book a boudoir session.

If confidence is something you're struggling with right now, waiting until you suddenly feel completely comfortable in your body can turn into waiting forever.

You can be nervous.

You can have insecurities.

You can tell me there are parts of yourself you're still learning how to love.

We can start there.

Then We Went Dark and Moody

Remember when she told me she wanted soft romantic and spicy and dark and moody?

We weren't done.

Once we had created the softer side of her gallery, we changed the environment and started pulling out something completely different.

That's where the library came in.

Same woman.

Same day.

Even similar colors in what she's wearing.

But change the lighting, the set, the posing, and the energy—and suddenly it doesn't feel like the same photoshoot at all.

One thing I've learned from photographing boudoir is that women don't fit neatly into one version of themselves.

You can be soft and still want something sexy.

You can love romantic photographs and dramatic shadows.

You can be nervous walking into the studio and still absolutely kill a darker, moodier set once we get going.

I don't need you to decide which one is the “real” you.

They're all you.

That's one of the reasons we plan your session around you instead of trying to squeeze every Hype Girl client into the same poses, the same lighting, and the same look.

That variety also gives you a final gallery that actually feels like an experience.

You aren't looking through 40 versions of essentially the same photograph.

You're seeing yourself change as we move through different parts of the studio.

Soft.

Sultry.

Moody.

Bold.

And sometimes we can take things even further.

And Then We Turned It All the Way Up

Soft?

Done.

Moody?

Done.

Now we got to play.

For the final part of her Jacksonville boudoir session, we moved into the neon set.

The soft window light was gone. The warm, shadowy library was gone.

Now we had saturated reds, blues and pinks, sequins, a pole, and a completely different energy.

And this photograph is one of the reasons I wanted to share her session instead of simply writing a post showing you different boudoir photography styles.

Look at the words behind her.

I am enough.

There's something about seeing those words glowing behind a woman who originally reached out because she was struggling with her self-esteem that hits a little differently.

And no, I'm not going to tell you that booking a boudoir photoshoot magically fixes every insecurity you've ever had.

That's not what I promise women.

What I can tell you, after watching women see themselves through my camera again and again, is that there can be something incredibly powerful about getting outside the way you're used to seeing yourself.

Sometimes the woman in the photograph looks a little different from the woman your inner critic has been describing to you.

And by this point in the session?

We're a long way from where we started.

Not because she suddenly became a different woman.

Because she got the chance to explore sides of herself that were already there.

When we started planning this session, she didn't give me one aesthetic.

She gave me a mix:

Soft. Romantic. Spicy. Dark. Moody.

Perfect.

We didn't make her choose which version of herself belonged in front of my camera.

We changed the lighting.

We changed the sets.

We changed the posing and energy.

And we made room for all of it.
